The Birth Of The Church

It was the Day of Pentecost. A Jewish holiday marking the giving of the Law on Mount Sinai, it occurred fifty days after the Passover. It also celebrated the beginning of the Feast of Harvest or Feast of Weeks. In ancient times, farmers brought the first fruits as an offering to God. However, after Christ’s crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension, the Day of Pentecost became the most important Sunday for the Body. Fifty days after the Passover Lamb was slain and risen, marked the birth of the Church.

Awaiting The Holy Spirit

Before being taken up, Jesus gave commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles He had chosen (Acts 1:2). He ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father. Not many days from then, they would be baptized with the Holy Spirit, receiving power from heaven to bring the gospel to the ends of the earth.

On that day, the apostles and other disciples of Christ were gathered together. Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like a mighty rushing wind (Acts 2:2). The sound filled the entire house, and tongues of fire miraculously appeared. Finally, this was the moment they were waiting for. This is who they were waiting for. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues.

Peter’s First Sermon

Due to the festival, there were Jews from every nation dwelling in Jerusalem. Bewildered by hearing the Galileans speak in their native languages and perplexed by what they were witnessing, some mocked the disciples and accused them of being drunk with wine. However, Peter, whom Jesus called to shepherd His flock (John 21:15-17), stood up and addressed the crowd. He quoted the prophet Joel concerning the coming of the Spirit. He testified about the life of Christ and exhorted the believers. On that day, many believed and were baptized. Consequently, day by day, as the disciples gathered together, the Lord added to their number, and the church grew.

Written On Our Hearts

When God appeared to Moses on Mount Sinai, His Law was written on tablets. The Day of Pentecost marked the day His Law was written on our hearts (Hebrews 8:10). So today, we celebrate God pouring out His Spirit on all humanity and making us His own.

Scripture To Meditate On

“When the day of Pentecost had arrived, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like that of a violent rushing wind came from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were staying. They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated and rested on each one of them. Then they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭2‬:‭1‬-‭4‬

“And it will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all people; then your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭2‬:‭17‬

“After this I will pour out my Spirit on all humanity; then your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your old men will have dreams, and your young men will see visions. I will even pour out my Spirit on the male and female slaves in those days.”
‭‭Joel‬ ‭2‬:‭28‬-‭29‬
