Love is in the air. Local shops are decorated pink and red as stuffed teddy bears line the aisles. As a child, I remember signing my Valentine cards for my class imagining what it would be like to experience it one day. But what is love exactly? The world has many opinions on the matter. But what does God say?

Point Them To Jesus
I love love. But I also know that God’s example differs greatly from the commercialized holiday we allow to overtake us every February. And I get it. There is a sweet energy that engulfs us this time of the year. In addition to the public displays of affection caught on camera, proposals are televised, and local reporters are tracking down the most heartwarming story to share as an exclusive. Admittedly, I enjoy it all. I delight in the memory a box of chocolates or a dozen roses can create. However, what Jesus demonstrates is incomparable.
1 Corinthians 13 tells us that love is patient, kind, is not arrogant or rude, is not self-seeking, not irritable, holds no record of wrongs, finds no joy in unrighteousness but rejoices in truth, bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and ENDURES all things. It all points to God. It points to His goodness, His forgiveness, His grace, and His sacrifice. His very nature is LOVE.
Jesus’ grace towards us, His patience with us, and sacrifice on the cross is the epitome of LOVE. It builds us, corrects us, and SAVES us. That is true love. So this month let us remember that God so loved the world that He GAVE. So the next time someone asks you what it is, point them to Jesus.
Questions To Ponder
- How does God’s love differ from the concept the world teaches?
- How have you experienced God’s love in your life?
Scripture To Meditate On
“Love is patient, love is kind. Love does not envy, is not boastful, is not arrogant, is not rude, is not self-seeking, is not irritable, and does not keep a record of wrongs. Love finds no joy in unrighteousness but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”
“But God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
“This is love: that we walk according to his commands. This is the command as you have heard it from the beginning: that you walk in love. ”
“for the Lord disciplines the one he loves, just as a father disciplines the son in whom he delights. ”
“And if I give away all my possessions, and if I give over my body in order to boast but do not have love, I gain nothing.”
With Love,
Tamara
