When we discuss the nature of God, we often tell of His omnipotence, presence, and His holiness. But we never talk about the sacrificial nature of God. It’s not a phrase we typically hear. We say that God is Spirit, righteous, and forgiving. But I truly believe that Jesus’s sacrifice perfectly reveals God’s nature. It unveils a patient, long-suffering, and merciful God.

A Creation Restored
This perfect, triune God, gave of Himself so His creation could be restored. We have eternal life because we have Christ. He bore the weight of the world and put sin to death on our behalf. We know that God does not change. Therefore, His righteousness must stand. Justice must stand. But He decided to pay the price himself when He sent Jesus, who is fully God. Jesus, who was without sin became sin. And he didn’t only pay the price for what we would perceive as “little sin.” He took on ALL SIN. Every amount of evil that you can comprehend. This is the God we serve.
God Is Not A Man
There are so many things that our human brain can not understand about God. Especially when it comes to the righteousness and justice of God. We like to think of Him from our human view and perspective. But God is not a man. The cross proves that. What man would take the punishment for the world? Take the sentence for your child, yes. Plead guilty for your spouse, yes. Sacrifice yourself for your friend, maybe. But take the punishment for the world. No.
So although we can’t fully understand God’s nature, His sacrifice allows us to see a glimmer of who He is. It gives us a foundation to know and accept that God’s ways are not our ways. His thoughts are not our thoughts. It gives a basis for our faith and it inspires us to keep seeking. The nature of God can be summed up into one word, Love. God is love. The sum of God’s nature, and who He is wrapped up in love.
Scripture To Meditate On
“For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”
“He himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours, but also for those of the whole world.”
“Furthermore, the Eternal One of Israel does not lie or change his mind, for he is not man who changes his mind.”
With Love,
Tamara
