Rejoice In Suffering?

It seems like an oxymoron—two separate and completely different experiences existing in a single moment. Can we really rejoice in suffering? James seems to think so.

A Mature Faith

The book of James is one of my favorite books of the Bible. Filled with heavenly wisdom and practical life application, I smile as the words water my soul with God’s truth. Yet, it is also home to one of the hardest truths I constantly find myself meditating on. Rejoice in suffering. When we are knee deep in despair and confusion, the last thing we want to do is rejoice. However, James, being led by the Holy Spirit’s wisdom, discovered a truth about endurance and mature faith.

He knew that tests and trials were fertile ground, ripe for producing growth in us. Endurance strengthens our faith and thus our witness. You see, despair points to circumstance, but faith points to God. When we allow endurance to “have its full effect,” without rushing through it, it does a holy work in us, maturing and completing us. It is not only for our benefit but also for those we evangelize and disciple. Suffering is an opportunity to find God in every moment of our pain. When we surrender control and seek Him, there He is, strengthening us with His wisdom, revealing His will, and promising “the crown of life.” Remember, Jesus learned obedience from what He suffered (Hebrews 5:8-9). Suffering perfects.

A Gift

Dare I say that suffering is a gift? Given to us by the Father to build us up. When we suffer for Christ, and not for our sinful desires, we live full of purpose and pursuit as we are drawn closer to God. It is here where we learn perseverance and discover hope.

With Love,

Tamara

‘Consider it a great joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you experience various trials, And let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing. ‘

James 1:2,4

‘Although he was the Son, he learned obedience from what he suffered. After he was perfected, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, ‘

Hebrews 5:8-9
