There are many women in the Bible that I greatly admire. I call them Yes Women. These are faithful women, who surrendered and gave their YES to God. One of those women is Mary, the mother of Jesus. Mary’s surrendered yes gave birth to our Messiah and the promise of salvation.

Who Was Mary?
Mary was a young woman who lived in Nazareth. She was engaged to Joseph whose lineage was from the house of David. The angel called her favored because she found favor with God.
When the angel Gabriel appeared to her, he revealed that she would give birth to the Saviour of the world. Honestly, I’m not sure she understood the gravity of what was happening. However, as one who found favor with God, I assume she was aware of the prophecy of promise and lived a life worthy of such a call.
Her Surrendered Yes
Mary asked the angel, “How can this be?” (Luke 1:34) I don’t believe this was a question of doubt but one of curiosity because she was a virgin. Remember, in the very same chapter, Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I know this?” when it was revealed that his wife Elizabeth would conceive a son in their old age. Because of his unbelief, his voice was taken until the vision came to pass. However, when Mary asked her question, it was revealed how it would occur. I can only assume that she had a heart that believed but not a mind to understand. Truthfully, this explains all of us. Who has the mind of God?
But it was Mary’s final response that encourages me how I am to respond to God. Once everything was revealed her response was, “I am the Lord’s servant. May it happen to me as you have said.” (Luke 1:38) She didn’t cower in fear or hide behind insecurity. Nor did she offer a rebuttal or try to negotiate different terms. Even more, she didn’t refuse because it would interfere with her plans of being engaged and soon married. I do not know all the thoughts that went through Mary’s mind at that time. What I do know is that she surrendered her yes.
We’re All Servants
Mary’s yes reminds us that we are all servants. We are servants who are called to follow God and do His will. It will probably be inconvenient and it may even cause us to be persecuted. But the most important yes we can ever give is the yes we give to God.
Scripture To Meditate On
“See, I am the Lord’s servant,” said Mary. “May it happen to me as you have said.” Then the angel left her.”
“Then the angel told her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Now listen: You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will have no end.”
With Love,
Tamara
