Many of us believe that the Bible promises happiness. We expect a life of ease and perfect bliss. While God does say that He comes to give us an abundant life, there is a promise that we often fail to acknowledge. That is the promise of suffering. The Bible instructs us to expect suffering as followers of Christ. Most of us in The United States have never known the persecution many of our brothers and sisters across the globe have endured because of our common faith. Therefore, we expect a comfortable Christianity. But God’s Word tells us that suffering is of great benefit to us and produces holy fruit. I pray that these Bible verses on endurance help to build your faith and character as you learn to suffer well and receive a heavenly reward.

Faith & Character
‘And not only that, but we also boast in our afflictions, because we know that affliction produces endurance, endurance produces proven character, and proven character produces hope. ‘ Romans 5:3-4
‘And let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing. ‘ James 1:4
‘For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with goodness, goodness with knowledge, knowledge with self-control, self-control with endurance, endurance with godliness, godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. ‘ 2 Peter 1:5-7
‘Endure suffering as discipline: God is dealing with you as sons. For what son is there that a father does not discipline? For they disciplined us for a short time based on what seemed good to them, but he does it for our benefit, so that we can share his holiness. No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. ‘ Hebrews 12:7,10-11
Suffering Well
‘Consider it a great joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you experience various trials, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance. ‘ James 1:2-3
‘May the Lord direct your hearts to God’s love and Christ’s endurance. ‘ 2 Thessalonians 3:5
‘But you have followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, and endurance, along with the persecutions and sufferings that came to me in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. What persecutions I endured — and yet the Lord rescued me from them all. In fact, all who want to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. ‘2 Timothy 3:10-12
‘For whatever was written in the past was written for our instruction, so that we may have hope through endurance and through the encouragement from the Scriptures. Now may the God who gives endurance and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, according to Christ Jesus, ‘ Romans 15:4-5
‘If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation. If we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings that we suffer. ‘ 2 Corinthians 1:6
A Heavenly Reward
‘So don’t throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you need endurance, so that after you have done God’s will, you may receive what was promised. ‘ Hebrews 10:35-36
‘But you, man of God, flee from these things, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of eternal life to which you were called and about which you have made a good confession in the presence of many witnesses. ‘ 1 Timothy 6:11-12
‘See, we count as blessed those who have endured. You have heard of Job’s endurance and have seen the outcome that the Lord brought about #— #the Lord is compassionate and merciful. ‘ James 5:11
‘Therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every hindrance and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. For the joy that lay before him, he endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. ‘ Hebrews 12:1-2
