The time had come for Jesus to lay down His life. As He made His way into Jerusalem, large crowds, there for the Passover festival, gathered when they heard that He was coming. Therefore, with great expectation and adoration, they took palm branches to greet Him as they shouted Hosanna. Today, thousands of years later, this scene is a picture of a holy palm that we acknowledge and celebrate in sanctuaries around the globe.

The Triumphal Entry
Jesus intentionally walked toward His death. Nevertheless, it was a death that would be short-lived and a death that would be defeated. Still, the shouts of victory would soon turn to cries of despair and confusion as Jesus hung on the cross. How could the promised Messiah be dead? How quickly the triumphal entry became a procession of mourning.
Little did they know that His death, His temporary death, would cause us to live! Generations later, the palm is a holy reminder of the arrival of the King. As Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, Christians gather in their local churches to sing praises to the Savior.
A Holy Sign
In addition to being used to honor royalty, the Palm branch is a sign of victory, serving as the perfect foreshadowing of Jesus’ sacrifice. Despite His crucifixion, Jesus would be victorious. Like the rejoicing at the Feast of Booths (Leviticus 23:40) or the celebration found in Revelation (Revelation 7:9-10), the palm is a constant reminder of the sovereignty and victory of God.
Scripture To Meditate On
‘The next day, when the large crowd that had come to the festival heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, they took palm branches and went out to meet him. They kept shouting: “ Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord ,— the King of Israel!” ‘
‘On the first day you are to take the product of majestic trees — palm fronds, boughs of leafy trees, and willows of the brook — and rejoice before the Lord your God for seven days. ‘
‘After this I looked, and there was a vast multitude from every nation, tribe, people, and language, which no one could number, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were clothed in white robes with palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice: Salvation belongs to our God, who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb! ‘
